Austria rewards marketers who respect detail. A digital marketing agency Austria firms brief will be judged on whether its keywords sound Austrian, whether its consent banner actually blocks tags, and whether its email lists were checked against the national opt-out register. Generic German-market plans rarely pass that test.
This briefing is organised as a sequence of decisions: who you sell to, which words they use, which channels they check, which rules apply and how we would run the work remotely. We are a team working from Pakistan with no Austrian premises or employees. Our language is English, and we plan German-language SEO; final German wording is produced by a native writer you sign off.
Decision 1: size up the market with official counts
For 2024, Eurostat's structural business statistics show 628,058 enterprises in Austria's business economy. Micro-enterprises with 0-9 persons employed account for 579,776 (92.3% of all enterprises), and 1,523 enterprises have 250 or more persons employed.
Two analytical points follow. First, the micro share is lower than in several neighbouring markets, so there is a meaningful layer of small and medium firms with marketing budgets and in-house managers who want reporting, not just activity. Second, the large-firm tier is compact. If you sell B2B to Austrian corporates, your realistic target list may fit in a spreadsheet, and content should be written for named roles inside those accounts.

Decision 2: choose Austrian vocabulary, not just German
Austrians search in German, but not always in the German of Germany. Food, administration, trades and everyday terms differ, and some regional words carry real search demand. A keyword list exported for Germany will miss them and may prioritise phrases that sound imported. We build the list from Austrian results and autocomplete, then mark which terms need Austrian spelling or vocabulary in the copy.
English matters for a narrower set of buyers: international firms, start-ups, tourism and expatriates in Vienna, Graz and Salzburg. For them a separate English section, tagged with hreflang, avoids diluting the German pages. Our SEO services cover this keyword architecture, and the hreflang generator handles the markup.
If your shop also sells into Germany, decide early whether one German version serves both countries or whether de-AT and de-DE pages are justified by different prices, delivery or legal text.
Decision 3: the channels Austrian buyers use to compare
Google drives most discovery, yet Austrian buyers verify elsewhere. Geizhals is the price-comparison habit for electronics and many hard goods, willhaben dominates classifieds for second-hand goods, cars, property and jobs, and Amazon's German storefront ships widely into Austria. Product data that is consistent across these places supports organic visibility at the same time.
Service businesses depend on the map pack. A complete Google Business Profile with accurate opening hours and Austrian place names is the baseline of local SEO. In B2B, LinkedIn leads for paid reach, while XING is still known among German-speaking recruiters. For high-intent queries, Google Ads with geographic exclusions keeps spend inside the regions you actually serve.
Decision 4: build campaigns around TKG 2021 and the ECG list
Austria's Telecommunications Act 2021 sets the core rules. Under Β§ 165(3) TKG 2021, published in the federal legal information system RIS, information on a device may be stored or read only when the user has been informed and has actively given consent; technical storage whose sole purpose is transmission or the requested service is exempt.
Section 174 then governs contact. Advertising calls and faxes without prior consent are unlawful. Direct-marketing email, SMS included, needs the recipient's prior consent, and that wording applies to any recipient, business or private. The soft opt-in in Β§ 174(4) covers your own customers and similar products, but only if they have not refused in advance, in particular by registering on the ECG list kept by RTR. Check lists against it before each send, because the register changes and an old export proves nothing about today.
Data protection complaints go to the Austrian Data Protection Authority. This section is orientation; your legal adviser should confirm specifics.
How a digital marketing agency Austria clients hire remotely should report
Our working week is Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm PKT, and PKT is UTC+5 all year. Austria runs on CET (UTC+1) in winter, so our day equals 5am to 2pm in Vienna; in summer, on CEST (UTC+2), it equals 6am to 3pm. Mornings are therefore fully shared, which suits the Austrian habit of early starts, and afternoon calls go into the diary by appointment. Written questions to [email protected] are handled the same working day.
Reporting is monthly and built for scrutiny. Each report lists rankings for the Austrian keyword set, organic and paid enquiries, ad spend, consent rates from the banner and the decisions waiting on you. German copy is never published without your reviewer's sign-off.
No lock-in applies: the arrangement renews monthly and either party can end it with 30 days' notice. Invoices are paid by bank transfer. To understand what the first check covers, see our SEO audit walkthrough.
Where Austrian firms find official help
The WKO founder service of the Austrian Economic Chambers advises new and growing businesses, and aws, the federal promotional bank, runs funding and guarantee schemes. Company details can be checked in the Firmenbuch via JustizOnline.
This hub also includes a Vienna guide for the capital's mix of tourism, services and headquarters, and neighbouring markets are covered in our Germany guide and Switzerland guide. To see how your site performs against Austrian competitors, request a free SEO audit.
