Most people hunting for a digital marketing agency Exeter can rely on end up comparing three or four proposals that sound alike. This page is written to help you tell them apart: which questions expose a weak plan, which numbers to ask for, and where the money usually goes for a Devon business.
Arb Digital is a small remote crew operating from Pakistan. We have no premises in Devon, so we will not pretend to know Fore Street from a cafΓ© window. What we can offer is a clear method, and the checks below apply whoever you hire.
What the Exeter business base tells you before any pitch
The ONS 2026 workbook counts 4,470 VAT or PAYE enterprises in the Exeter City council area, trading from 5,960 sites. The 735 professional, scientific and technical businesses make up the largest single industry group. Some 85.2% employ nine people or fewer, while 30 have 250 or more staff.
Read those figures as a buyer. A city where accountants, consultants, surveyors and engineers dominate the count is a city where clients research carefully before calling. The boundary is also narrow: Cranbrook, Exminster, Topsham's outskirts and much of the Sowton and Marsh Barton trade belt draw on customers well beyond it. Ask any agency how it would cover those surrounding postcodes without creating thin copies of the same page.

Questions to put to a digital marketing agency Exeter firms shortlist
Bring this list to every first call. Who exactly will do the work, and can you speak to them? Which three measures will the monthly report track, and how do they connect to enquiries rather than traffic? What will the first 90 days deliver in writing? How are Google Ads budgets separated from the management fee? Who owns the ad account, analytics and website logins if you leave?
Then check the answers. Ask for a sample report with client names removed. Look at whether the proposal names your actual services and the places you serve, or could have been sent to a florist in Leeds. A firm that cannot answer the ownership question plainly is telling you something.
Matching channels to Exeter's sector mix
For professional practices, SEO built around specific services, such as R&D tax claims, planning consultancy or employment law, outperforms a single generic homepage. Pair that with local SEO so the practice appears in map results across Heavitree, St Thomas and Pinhoe.
Hospitality and retail around Princesshay, Gandy Street and the Quay lean on visitors and on students at the University of Exeter, so time-limited Google Ads around term dates and events can pay its way. Businesses near Exeter Science Park and the Met Office supply chain often sell to other firms; for them, case-led content and LinkedIn tend to matter more than map pins. Answers in AI search tools also draw from clear, well-structured service pages, which our guide to appearing in Google AI Overviews explains.
Reading the Exeter results page as a buyer
Our 20 October 2026 search showed results crowded by national providers with Exeter location pages, a print-and-web franchise and agency directories, with a handful of independent Exeter studios in between. A New Hampshire town of the same name also crept in. For your own site, that means clear Devon signals in titles, EX postcodes in contact details and page copy that mentions real neighbourhoods. It also means directories will often outrank small firms, so a complete Business Profile is non-negotiable.
Two rules to check before you launch campaigns
Here are the points that matter most for Exeter's mix; read the official guidance for your own case.
Feedback on your profile. Since 6 April 2025 the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act lets the CMA fine traders directly for fake or incentivised-but-hidden review content. Do not buy it, do not ask staff to post it, and keep a simple process for spotting and removing suspicious entries. The CMA's guidance on fake review content sets out what reasonable steps look like.
Newsletters to past clients. Professional firms often email former customers. Under PECR's email marketing rules, individuals need consent unless the soft opt-in applies: details collected during a sale, similar services only, and an opt-out every time.
The time-zone objection, answered, and where to get help
The usual worry about a remote team is responsiveness. We keep weekday hours of nine till six on PKT, which puts us online from the small hours until about 1pm in a Devon winter and 2pm in summer. Requests sent first thing are normally handled the same morning; afternoon calls are booked ahead. Arrangements roll monthly, ending on 30 days' notice, and you can reach us at [email protected].
Free local advice is available from the Heart of the South West Growth Hub and the Exeter Chamber. For comparison, see our notes on Bristol up the M5 and coastal Bournemouth, or the wider England overview. To see the checklist applied to your site, request a no-cost audit.
