Few British towns have reinvented themselves as often as Sunderland. It once launched more ships than almost anywhere on earth and mined coal under its own streets, then lost both within a generation. Car making filled much of the gap, and now electric batteries, offices and screen production are being added on top. A marketing agency Sunderland companies hire should start from that sequence, because each layer brings different customers.
A plain statement before we go on: Arb Digital operates from Pakistan. We have nobody on Wearside, and this page reflects research rather than personal experience of the city.
Shipyards, then Nissan, then batteries and studios
The yards closed in 1988 and Wearmouth Colliery followed in the early nineties. Nissan's Sunderland plant, opened in 1986, became the anchor that kept engineering skills in the area, and a supplier base grew around it. The next chapter is electric: battery manufacturing linked to the EV36Zero programme, and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park beside the A19.
The city centre is changing too. Riverside Sunderland is converting former industrial land into offices, homes and public space, while the combined authority's creative development zone backs the city's film and television ambitions around the planned Crown Works Studios.
Underneath the headlines sits a small-firm economy. ONS 2026 records 6,085 VAT or PAYE enterprises in the Sunderland council area, operating from 7,830 sites. Construction is the biggest group with 925 businesses; 86.4% of enterprises have up to nine staff and 35 employ 250 or more.

Turning that story into a marketing plan
Tier-two and tier-three suppliers. Firms machining parts, moving freight or maintaining lines for the automotive cluster sell to procurement teams with long approval processes. SEO around capabilities, accreditations and sectors served, supported by LinkedIn activity, keeps you visible during those months of research.
Builders and home services. With construction the largest category and new housing going up across the city, trades need local SEO covering Washington, Houghton-le-Spring and Seaham as well as the centre.
Creative and digital start-ups. Freelancers and production services hoping to work on screen projects need portfolios that load fast and explain credits clearly. Social media matters more here than in most sectors, because crews and producers hire through networks.
What a marketing agency Sunderland search turns up
On 20 October 2026 the UK results for our target phrase were mostly news stories about Wearside agencies opening or moving offices, plus a Bark directory listing. Very few firms had built a dedicated service page explaining what they do for Sunderland clients.
That pattern repeats in many local trades. When the competition is a news article or a directory, a clear page naming your services, areas and credentials can climb quickly. AI assistants behave similarly; they quote sources that answer the question directly. Ask one for a Wearside electrician or a precision engineer near the A19 and it reaches for pages that name the service, the area and the credentials in plain sentences. A business with thin pages simply goes unmentioned, however good its work. Writing for those tools is no different from writing well for people: specific, factual and current.
Compliance for suppliers, trades and studios
Orientation only, not legal advice.
Cold calling. B2B suppliers still phone prospects. Before calling any business number, screen it against the Corporate Telephone Preference Service; the TPS website explains both registers.
Data on named contacts. Lists of buyers and engineers are personal data. The ICO's UK GDPR resources cover legitimate interests assessments and opt-outs.
Paying the fee. Most firms holding customer records owe the ICO an annual data protection fee; sole traders are often caught out.
Early shifts on the A19 and a Pakistan schedule
Wearside starts early. Car plant and warehouse shifts begin before dawn, and many residents commute to Newcastle on the Metro. Search behaviour follows: trades get calls from people on breaks, and B2B buyers research before the morning meetings. We work 9am to 6pm Pakistan time, so in GMT months we are online from about 4am to 1pm Sunderland time, and from 5am to 2pm once summer time begins. That overlap covers the hours your buyers are most active. Later calls are scheduled in advance; email reaches us at [email protected].
Everything is month-to-month with 30 days' notice to stop. A written report lands every month, and payment is by bank transfer.
Regional help and neighbouring markets
For export help, introductions and member events, Wearside firms turn to the North East Chamber of Commerce. The North East Growth Hub is the first place to ask about grants, skills funding and mentoring for small and growing firms. The GOV.UK business support pages list national programmes. All of them are free to use, so speak to them before committing any budget to outside help.
Plenty of Wearside firms also sell into Tyneside and County Durham; see our Newcastle and Durham guides. Want a frank view of your current site? Ask for a free audit, or read SEO versus PPC to weigh up where to start.
