CBS counts 216,360 business establishments in the municipality of Amsterdam on 1 January 2026, a provisional figure. 54,560 of them are in specialist business services and 18,555 in information and communication. In plain terms, about a quarter of the city sells advice and expertise, and more than one in twelve sells software, media or connectivity. That is why the results page for a digital marketing agency Amsterdam searchers see is packed with English-language agency sites: the city's own businesses are the most competitive marketers in the country.
We do not pretend to be one of those canal-side studios. Arb Digital runs from Pakistan with no Amsterdam address, works in English through your morning, and competes on focus, documentation and flexible terms.
Why is Amsterdam so hard to rank in?
Three reasons stack up. First, density: with 216,360 establishments, nearly every service has dozens of local providers fighting for the same phrases. Second, language: because English is the working language for so many teams here, you compete with Dutch firms, international firms and global brands on the same English queries. Third, sophistication: the 18,555 tech and media establishments include people who do SEO and paid search for a living, and their own sites show it.
The practical answer is not to chase the broadest term. A scale-up selling payroll software should own payroll questions for Dutch employers; a Zuidas law firm should own specific practice areas and the questions in-house counsel ask. Narrow, specific pages built with proper technical SEO win where generic service pages stall.

Who are you really competing with in Zuidas, the canal ring and Science Park?
The Zuidas business district concentrates financial, legal and business-service firms alongside names such as ABN AMRO, AkzoNobel, Google and the European Medicines Agency. Suppliers to that world, from compliance consultants to event companies, sell to procurement teams who research thoroughly and compare several vendors before calling.
The historic centre and neighbourhoods such as De Pijp and the Jordaan are dominated by hospitality, retail and creative studios, where local SEO and map visibility drive footfall. Amsterdam Science Park in the east brings research institutes and data-technology companies, whose buyers search technically and often in English.
Each of these needs a different plan. We start by mapping which of them your customers belong to, because a strategy copied from a consumer brand will waste money on a business-to-business audience.
What should a digital marketing agency Amsterdam scale-ups hire actually prioritise?
For a venture-backed or fast-growing company, the usual order is:
- Measurement first. Consent-compliant analytics, conversion tracking and a CRM link so every metric we report is about pipeline, not vanity numbers.
- High-intent paid search. Google Ads on a tight set of commercial and competitor terms produces learning quickly.
- Content that ranks and gets cited. Comparison pages, integration guides and clear definitions, written so search engines and AI assistants can quote them. Our generative engine optimisation work covers that second audience.
- Links earned through useful data. Amsterdam media and trade titles respond to original numbers, not press releases.
Broad awareness on social platforms comes later, once you know which message converts.
English or Dutch: which does Amsterdam search in?
More English than anywhere else in the country, yet still not only English. Internationals, start-up founders, recruiters and many business buyers search in English. Long-standing Dutch firms, public bodies and most local consumers search in Dutch, particularly for practical services such as accountants, contractors and healthcare.
We write and optimise English pages. For the Dutch side we deliver keyword research, page structure and a brief for your writer, and we configure hreflang so the two versions support each other instead of competing. We do not supply native Dutch copywriting, and we say so before you sign anything.
Which Dutch rules shape Amsterdam campaigns?
National law applies in the capital as everywhere else, and two rules matter most for growth teams. Since 1 July 2026, telemarketing to consumers and sole traders is allowed only with explicit prior consent, as the ACM sets out; the old exception for existing customers has gone. Many Amsterdam freelancers are sole traders, so outbound calling to them is now risky. Separately, the Telecommunicatiewet requires consent before cookies or trackers are placed, and before unsolicited electronic marketing is sent.
These are obligations to plan around, not legal advice. We set up consent banners and Consent Mode before launch and build lead capture so consent is recorded at the point of sign-up.
How would working with us from Amsterdam run?
Our team keeps Pakistan hours, 9am to 6pm PKT, Monday to Friday. In Amsterdam that window opens before dawn and closes in mid-afternoon, roughly 6am to 3pm in summer and an hour earlier in winter. Reports are in your inbox when you arrive, and calls fit before lunch; later slots are bookable in advance.
We begin with a free audit, agree a ninety-day plan in writing, then deliver monthly with a short report on enquiries, rankings and spend. You can leave with thirty days' notice. Payment is by bank transfer.
Free local support is worth using alongside any agency: the City of Amsterdam business pages, the Amsterdam Economic Board and KVK. For wider context, read our Netherlands guide or the Utrecht guide.
